Turkish Spice & Coffee Grinder
Our quirky but gorgeous Turkish spice grinder can be used as a traditional pepper grinder for the table or to grind your own mix of spices. Simple to use, you just fill the top dispenser with black pepper corns or your own spice seed mix. As you grind, the spice powder collects in the dispenser at the bottom. These grinders can also be used for grinding coffee beans, but don't mix its use ...unless you like spicy coffee. They look beautiful perched on a shelf in your kitchen, and are always a great talking point when you have guests!
So, what makes our Turkish Spice Grinders so special?
Three years living in Turkey introduced us to many new and wonderful experiences; the people, the language, the landscape, food, culture and lifestyle. One of the highlights for us was learning a little about traditional turkish cooking and discovering practical and beautiful tools for the kitchen.
The Turks are renowned for their hospitality and generosity and our neighbours Gülşan and Ali were no exception. They introduced us to traditional home cooked Turkish food. We couldn't visit them without being fed a three course meal and we always left laden with fruit and vegetables to take home. Their garden was brimming with vegetables and fruit, chickens & goats roamed freely in their garden and there was always a mound of spices, herbs and fruit drying out in the sunshine on their shed roof. They worked together all spring and summer growing their fruit and vegetables and in the autumn they busied themselves preparing their produce to last them through the winter; fruit preserves, dried fruit and nuts, tomato, pepper and aubergine sauces, pickled vegetables and spice mixes.
Gülşan's speciality in the kitchen was her lamb meatballs, 'kuzu köfte' as they are called in Turkey. Before we moved back to UK, we spent an afternoon together sharing recipes and cooking her meatball speciality....and this was when I was introduced to her spice grinder and her special 'köfte' spice mix emerged!
So when we headed back to UK and our new home in Porthmadog, our Turkish Spice Grinder joined us...
